Notes | Done like Fritz Lang's _Metropolis_; Jonathan Dayton: _We did look at 'Caligari,' and we looked at a lot of German Expressionist film. But it was also very important to avoid 'Caligari.' It was both inspiration and something to work around, because it has such a strong, specific style, and there have been other videos that have completely ripped it off._; Valerie Faris: _We didn't look at 'Calagari' all that much, really. We did, but then we just left it. We did look at a lot of the works of the futurist artists from the '30s, and the illustrations of the Surrealists and from Cubism. We were inspired more by paintings than by films when were deciding what we do with the sets, because all the sets, for the most part, were two-dimensional._; Jonathan Dayton: _Well, when it came to the effects, it was very important to us to do as much in camera as possible. So we used a lot of classic film techniques, using miniatures and forced perspective. The base of the ladder room is all miniature, with a blue screen element for the guy climbing the ladder. Having said that, we also know that there's a whole bag of tricks you can use in modern post to enhance something. So with the foundation of an old-school film technique, we tripled the number of ladders in post._ |

[Chorus:] How long how long will I slide Separate my side I don't I don't believe it's bad Slit my throat It's all I ever I heard your voice through a photograph I thought it up it brought up the past Once you know you can never go back I've got to take it on the otherside Centuries are what it meant to me A cemetery where I marry the sea ... |
