Synopsis

Gillian Anderson appears as a sensual, dreamlike version of herself, watching two gold-colored humanoid robots move through an intimate encounter. Their mechanical gestures and suggestive interaction blur the boundary between technology and desire, while Anderson's spoken-word performance supplies the track's erotic, futuristic narration. The video shifts between her voyeuristic presence and stylized images of the robots, creating a glossy 1990s vision of cybersex, artificial intimacy, and a consciousness dissolving into a virtual world.

Factoids & Trivia

• "Extremis" began as the theme music for the BBC science series "Future Fantastic," which Anderson hosted. She liked HAL's track and suggested adding a spoken-word performance rather than singing.

• Anderson recorded her vocal parts at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, working with HAL and producer David McNabb. The session reportedly lasted about nine hours.

• Anderson selected lines from several pages of material written by HAL, choosing passages that seemed to fit the rhythm and atmosphere of the music.

• She described the project as a one-off creative experiment, not the beginning of a music career. The single was released by Virgin Records in 1997.

• The original edit was considered too racy for general release, so some scenes were toned down in the version issued internationally.

• The video was shot in Vancouver and London. Its gold humanoids were augmented with computer-generated imagery, and the tracking work was completed manually, before automated motion-tracking tools were commonly available.
