Synopsis

Near the end of Monty Python's Life of Brian, Brian and several fellow prisoners face crucifixion. Instead of responding with despair, Eric Idle's character launches into a relentlessly cheerful song about finding happiness in everyday life. The condemned men gradually join in, turning a grim execution scene into an absurdly upbeat musical number. Smiling faces, swaying bodies, and jaunty whistling make the contrast between the lyrics and the situation the joke's central device, while the song carries the film into its closing credits.

• Eric Idle wrote the song specifically to solve the problem of how to end Life of Brian, whose main characters were being sent to their deaths. He reportedly developed the basic song in about an hour.
